When it comes to music history, there are certain places that shine like stars, forever etched in the collective memory of cultural revolutions. Memphis, Tennessee is a city that pulses with the heartbeat of a genre that changed the world – Rock and Roll. Nestled along the majestic Mississippi River, you’ll find a symphony of sounds, a mosaic of cultures, and a testament to the undying spirit of creativity.

I had the pleasure in exploring the iconic city of Memphis in partnership with Memphis Tourism to showcase their direct flight from Boston. From the moment we landed until the day we left, we were enlightened and entertained by the vibrant atmosphere and culture this city offers.
Throughout our journey we experienced a luxury hotel in the heart of downtown, explored local museums and art exhibits, stepped into the world of Elvis, enjoyed some live music, explored the great outdoors, and had the best BBQ we’ve ever had.
So without further ado, let the melodies guide us and let the rhythms transport us as we unravel the tale of Memphis: The Birthplace of Rock and Roll.

Tour the Legendary Sun Studio
Sun Studio in Memphis stands as an iconic testament to the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, a hallowed ground where musical legends left an unforgettable mark. Founded in 1950 by Sam Phillips, this legendary recording studio became the creative space for artists like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. There’s something truly special about being able to stand on the same grounds where famous celebrities, leaders, and game-changers once stood, transporting you to that time period. Which leads me to my next must-visit spot.
National Civil Rights Museum
The National Civil Rights Museum is a museum and cultural institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history and legacy of the American civil rights movement and its impact on society. The museum is situated at the Lorraine Motel, which was the site of the assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968. One of the museum’s focal points is the Lorraine Motel balcony, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was standing when he was assassinated. The balcony has been preserved as a solemn reminder of the sacrifice and courage of those who fought for civil rights.
I’m going to be honest, I didn’t even realizer the museum was attached to the site of MLK’s assassination and it stung my heart to see it. I have loved and admired MLK since I was a kid and have seen many documentaries on the place where I stood. It was all so surreal and devastating.
The museum itself features a collection of exhibits, artifacts, and interactive displays that trace the history of the civil rights movement from its beginnings to its various milestones and achievements. It covers key events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Freedom Rides, the Birmingham campaign, the March on Washington, and more. The museum’s exhibits also highlight the contributions of various individuals, organizations, and grassroots movements that played a significant role in advancing civil rights and social justice in the United States.
The National Civil Rights Museum provides an educational and thought-provoking experience, aiming to foster a deeper understanding of the struggle for equality and justice in America. It serves as an important cultural and historical institution that continues to promote dialogue and reflection on issues related to civil rights, social justice, and human rights.
Please don’t skip out on this when you visit Memphis. It’s a museum you’ll never forget.

For exploring the city’s attractions, opt for casual chic attire with breathable fabrics with comfortable shoes. Dining out in Memphis calls for a touch of Southern comfort, so think smart-casual ensembles or versatile dresses that pay homage to the city’s rich heritage. When visiting historical sites like Graceland, choose respectful and modest clothing. Remember to adapt your wardrobe to the changing seasons, incorporating layers for cooler months and rain gear as needed.
