There’s so much to love about road trips, especially through New England! I love being able to explore the world by car, especially in different seasons. Some of my most treasured memories were made on road trips like this fall foliage trip.
Road trips can also mean spending a lot of time sitting inside your vehicle. But you don’t have to compromise your style to stay comfortable! Wearing the right clothes will not only make you look good, but also feel good. Then, you can enjoy the ride without worrying about how you look.
The outfits that you wear will depend on where you’re going, the time of year, and how long the car ride will be. Still, every cute road trip outfit has one thing in common: comfort. If you’re looking for some great options to wear on a long road trip, I’m sharing a roundup of outfit ideas. Each one is guaranteed to keep you comfortable and cute, even on a long road trip.
What To Wear On A Road Trip
Comfy Shirts And Tank Tops
Soft, breathable shirts and tank tops are a road trip must-have. You don’t necessarily have to stick with t-shirts, but cotton tees are a super versatile option. Plus, you can easily switch out short sleeves for long sleeves if you’ll be traveling in cold weather.
Leave any tight-fitting, itchy, heavy, or uncomfortable tops at home. If you’re going to spend long hours in the small space of a car, a comfortable top is crucial.
Breathable Bottoms
Leggings are undeniably the best for road trips. It doesn’t get any more comfy than a good pair of leggings. Plus, they’re SO versatile! You can style them with anything and look fabulous.
Other great options for a road trip outfit include joggers or even a good pair of jeans (as long as they’re not too bulky or uncomfortable). Personally, I love a good cotton or linen matching set. Or, you can skip the bottoms all-together and wear a dress!
The main thing to keep in mind when choosing bottoms, is that you want to avoid anything that is too tight or heavy. Stay away from materials that aren’t as breathable as others, or you’ll easily overheat. You’d be surprised by how uncomfortable you can be in the wrong pair of pants or shorts.
Extra Layers
Even if you don’t plan on traveling somewhere in cooler temperatures, I highly recommend at least packing extra layers.
Whether someone is cranking the A/C in the car, or the temps drop as you make your way to your destination, a sweater, jacket or other extra layer is great to have on hand for all the rest stops along the way. A denim jacket is one of my favorite extra layers.
Comfortable Shoes
Shoes make all the difference when it comes to comfort and travel. The most comfortable road trip shoes are lightweight, breathable, and easy to slip on and off.
You don’t want to be stuck trying to put on heavy, uncomfortable shoes whenever you make a quick pit stop. Sandals and lightweight sneakers are my go-to travel shoes, but the right flats and boots can work well too. I recommend avoiding flip flops if you’re driving, because you don’t want them to get stuck under the pedal.

This is the quintessential winter road trip outfit. You can easily mix things up depending on the weather. Even in warmer temperatures, the hoodie works well as an extra layer. It’s just the right size for all your travel essentials.

Lululemon is one of my favorite places to shop for activewear and loungewear. They offer some fantastic pieces that work perfectly for long road trips. This whole outfit is so comfortable, you’ll feel like you’re wearing pajamas.
Another great thing about Lululemon loungewear is that you can wear it with sandals, sneakers, or slip-ons. Ultimately, the shoes you choose will probably depend on the weather, but I love having the ability to choose from different options.
